A biotech company that makes Zolgensma, a one-time gene therapy for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a rare genetic disease that weakens muscles in young children. Founded in Dallas in 2012 when John Carbona reorganized a stem-cell bank called BioLife Cell Bank, AveXis built its treatment on research from Nationwide Children's Hospital. It was acquired by pharma giant Novartis in 2018.
