A natural gas utility whose main business is Washington Gas Light Company, which pipes gas to homes and businesses across the Washington, D.C. metro area and surrounding states. It traces its roots to 1848, when the nation's capital got its first gas streetlamps, and the company's name literally recalls that early role of lighting the city. WGL Holdings was formed in 2000 as a holding company around the longtime utility, and in 2018 it was acquired by Canada's AltaGas.
