A cloud-based platform for building websites and online stores without writing code, Wix lets anyone drag and drop their way to a professional-looking site. Three developers founded it in Tel Aviv in 2006 after getting frustrated trying to build a website for another project; the name was picked to start with "W" as a nod to the World Wide Web. Early versions ran on Adobe Flash, and the whole platform had to be rebuilt in HTML5 when Apple dropped Flash support on the iPhone.
