The company was born in 2000 when The Geon Company merged with M.A. Hanna to form PolyOne, renamed Avient in 2020. Its roots trace to 1927, when B.F. Goodrich chemist Waldo Semon accidentally made flexible vinyl by plasticizing PVC—proving his waterproof coating by pouring water over fabric on a vice president's mail.
