An online publisher of consumer health information, WebMD runs the hugely popular WebMD.com site where millions of people look up symptoms, drugs, and wellness advice, plus Medscape for doctors. It was founded by entrepreneur Jeff Arnold in 1998 and merged the next year with Healtheon, a company started by Netscape co-founder Jim Clark, briefly operating as Healtheon/WebMD before settling on the name. The "MD" in its name isn't an actual doctor — it plays on the internet "web" and the medical degree, a wink at being an "online doctor."
