A maker of video games and the Unreal Engine, the software toolkit behind thousands of games including Fortnite and Gears of War. Founded in 1991 by programmer Tim Sweeney in his parents' house in Maryland as Potomac Computer Systems, it renamed itself Epic MegaGames after its first hit, ZZT, then shortened it to Epic Games. Its Unreal Engine, born from the 1998 game Unreal, has become one of the most widely used game engines in the world.
