Clayton Williams Energy, Inc.

An independent oil and gas explorer and producer from Midland, Texas, that drilled for crude and natural gas across the Permian Basin and beyond, pioneering horizontal drilling in the region. It was founded by West Texas oilman Clayton W. Williams Jr., who started in the oil fields as a lease broker in 1957 before taking the company public in 1993. The colorful founder — known to friends as "Claytie" — later ran for Texas governor in 1990 against Ann Richards in a race famously dubbed "Claytie and the Lady."
