A maker of programmable logic chips, Xilinx invented the FPGA (field-programmable gate array) — chips that customers can reconfigure in the field to do different jobs, rather than being locked in at the factory. Its products power everything from data centers and 5G networks to cars and aerospace systems. Founded in 1984 by three engineers, the company's name comes from the Greek word "xylon" (wood) plus the chemical symbol for silicon, "Si," evoking the idea of a programmable "wooden" chip. AMD acquired Xilinx in 2022, folding it into its data-center and adaptive-computing business.
