A technology company often called the "Google of Russia," Yandex runs the country's dominant search engine along with a wide ecosystem of services, including ride-hailing (Yandex Taxi), food delivery, e-commerce, and self-driving cars. It was launched in 1997 by school friends Arkady Volozh and Ilya Segalovich, who coined the name as a play on "Yet Another iNDEXer" — and in Russian, the "Ya" (Я) means "I," so the name doubles as "I-ndex." Its self-driving taxis were famously trained in Moscow's harsh winters and heavy traffic.
