Bhp Group Plc
One of the world's largest mining companies, BHP produces iron ore, copper, and other metals used in steel, wiring, and electronics. The name comes from Broken Hill, an Australian outback site where boundary shepherd Charles Rasp mistook a glittering rock for tin in 1883; it turned out to be one of the richest silver, lead, and zinc deposits ever found, and the company was founded there in 1885. In 2001 BHP merged with tin miner Billiton, briefly trading as BHP Billiton before returning to the BHP name.
