A Canadian software and cybersecurity firm, BlackBerry Limited makes QNX, a secure operating system inside digital dashboards of cars from the world's top automakers, plus encryption tools used by governments. It began as Research In Motion, founded in Waterloo, Ontario in 1984, before its keyboard phone made it famous. The name came from the device's round keys, which reminded its namers of the little bumps on a blackberry fruit.
