A reinsurer based in Munich, Germany, Munich Re is the world's largest company that insures other insurance companies, helping them cover big losses from disasters, accidents, and life-and-health claims. It also sells insurance directly to people and businesses through its ERGO Group. Founded in 1880 by Carl von Thieme in a small office with just four employees, its German name literally means "Munich Reinsurance Company." Because it works behind the scenes insuring insurers, most people never see its name on a policy — a "silent giant" of the insurance world.
