A firm that pays the legal bills for businesses and law firms pursuing commercial lawsuits and arbitration, taking a share of the winnings only if the case succeeds. Founded in 2009 by a former Time Warner general counsel and a Georgetown law professor in the wake of the financial crisis, it has grown into the world's largest litigation-finance provider. Its name comes from the Old English for "fortified town by a river crossing."
