A maker of embedded semiconductors that power cars, home appliances, industrial machines, and networking gear, Freescale spun out of Motorola in 2004 and later joined NXP in 2015. Its chips handle everything from engine control to appliances. The name blends "free" (independence from its parent) with "scale" (its global manufacturing reach), and its Motorola roots helped relay the first words from the moon back to Earth.
