A diversified investment group focused on Sub-Saharan Africa, Lonrho owns and operates businesses in food supply chains, market expansion, and infrastructure, including the Luba Freeport in Equatorial Guinea and hotels in Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Founded in 1909 as the London and Rhodesian Mining and Land Company, its name is a portmanteau of "London" and "Rhodesia," and it was shortened to Lonrho in 1963. In 1973, British Prime Minister Edward Heath famously called the company "the unpleasant and unacceptable face of capitalism."
