A reinsurer that helps insurance companies manage big, sudden risks, PartnerRe sells coverage across property and casualty, specialty lines, and life and health. It was founded in Bermuda in 1993 in the wake of Hurricane Andrew, when the storm's devastation left the market short on catastrophe coverage. The name reflects its collaborative approach — the company built its business on being a long-term 'partner' to insurers — and it is now owned by the French mutual insurer Covéa.
