A British universal bank headquartered in London, Barclays serves everyday consumers with current accounts, savings, mortgages and loans, while also handling lending, cash management and wealth planning for businesses and wealthy families around the world. It traces its roots to 1690, when two Quaker goldsmith-bankers, John Freame and Thomas Gould, set up shop on Lombard Street; the Barclay name arrived in 1736 when James Barclay married Freame's daughter and joined the firm. The bank's black spread-eagle logo comes from the sign on the building the partners moved into in 1728, chosen because most people back then couldn't read.
