A British bank headquartered in London that serves individuals, businesses, and institutions with banking, credit cards, and investment services. It traces its roots to 1690, when two Quaker goldsmith bankers, John Freame and Thomas Gould, opened shop on Lombard Street; the Barclay name came from James Barclay, who married Freame's daughter and joined as a partner in 1736. In 1966 it launched Barclaycard, the first all-purpose credit card in the UK, run from a converted shoe factory in Northampton.
