Barclays Bank Plc
A British universal bank headquartered in London, Barclays offers everyday current accounts, savings, mortgages and credit cards to individuals, plus corporate lending and investment-banking services to businesses around the world. Its roots reach back to 1690, when two Quaker goldsmith bankers, John Freame and Thomas Gould, started taking deposits at a shop on London's Lombard Street, and the family name Barclay stuck after Freame's son-in-law joined the partnership in 1736. The bank's black spread-eagle logo comes from the sign that hung outside that early Lombard Street premises in 1728, when most customers couldn't read.
