A British universal bank serving everyday savers, borrowers, and cardholders as well as large corporations and investors, with products ranging from current accounts and mortgages to credit cards and investment banking. Its roots reach back to 1690, when two Quaker goldsmith bankers, John Freame and Thomas Gould, began taking deposits on Lombard Street in London; the Barclays name arrived in 1736 when James Barclay joined the firm. In 1966 it launched Barclaycard, the first credit card in the United Kingdom, which was also one of the first forms of credit available to women without a male guarantor.
