A special-purpose acquisition company, or SPAC — a "blank check" firm with no business of its own that raises money from investors to buy a private company and take it public. Formed in 2020 by venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya and investment firm Hedosophia, it listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker IPOD, the fourth in a series of SPACs whose tickers marched through the alphabet (IPOA, IPOB, IPOC, IPOD...). It never completed a merger and was liquidated in 2022, returning its trust funds to shareholders.
