Validus Holdings, Ltd.

A Bermuda-based reinsurer that sells insurance to other insurance companies, covering big short-tail risks like property catastrophes, marine and energy losses. It was founded in 2005, right after the devastating 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons left the market short on capacity. The name comes from the Latin word for "strong," and in 2018 the company was folded into insurance giant AIG.
