A special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC — a "blank check" firm that raises money through a stock listing with one goal in mind: merging with a private business to carry it onto the public market. Formed by Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group, it went public in 2020 and soon agreed to merge with 23andMe, the consumer genetics company known for its at-home DNA testing kits. After the deal closed in 2021, its shares became those of 23andMe Holding Co., trading on the Nasdaq under the ticker "ME."
