A diversified food and retail group based in London, Associated British Foods makes grocery staples like Twinings tea, Ovaltine, Ryvita crispbread, and Kingsmill bread, and runs the value-fashion chain Primark. It began in 1935 when Canadian businessman W. Garfield Weston bought up British bakeries, and the company renamed itself Associated British Foods in 1960 as it spread beyond baking. A fun quirk: Primark still trades under the name Penneys in its home market of Ireland, where it opened its first store in 1969.
