A Japanese cosmetics and skincare house whose brands — from Senka's Perfect Whip cleanser to the Anessa sun-care line — are used by people around the world. It began in 1872 when naval pharmacist Arinobu Fukuhara opened Japan's first Western-style pharmacy in Tokyo's Ginza district. The name comes from an ancient Chinese text meaning "praise the virtues of the earth that nurtures new life," and the company made Japan's first domestically produced toothpaste in 1888.
