Olympus Corporation

A Japanese maker of medical endoscopes and surgical imaging systems used by doctors and hospitals around the world. It was founded in Tokyo in 1919 by Takeshi Yamashita as Takachiho Seisakusho, originally building microscopes. The name "Olympus" arrived in 1921 as the international twin of Mount Takachiho, the mythological home of Shinto gods — chosen to suggest products "crafted by the gods," just as Mount Olympus was home to the Greek gods. The company also once made famous cameras, a business that now lives on under the OM SYSTEM brand.
