Horiba Ltd

A maker of precision measurement and analysis instruments, Horiba builds the pH meters, automotive emission testers, and semiconductor process tools used in labs, factories, and hospitals around the world. It began in 1945 when founder Masao Horiba, still a student at Kyoto University, set up a small radio laboratory in Kyoto to make capacitors for nuclear physics research. When rising material costs squeezed that business, he built his own pH meter because imported ones were pricey and unreliable in Japan's humid climate — and that invention became an instant hit, steering the company toward the analytical instruments it makes today.
