A Japanese chemical maker that turns natural gas and petroleum into everyday materials, from methanol and formalin to Iupilon polycarbonate resin used in smartphone displays, car parts, and packaging. The company was born in 1971 from an unusual "equal" merger of two firms with different chemistries—one built on natural gas, the other on petrochemicals—and traces its roots back to 1918. Its name literally combines those two halves: the gas-based chemistry and the Mitsubishi group's chemical arm.
