A maker of steel for everything from cars and construction to appliances, ArcelorMittal is one of the world's largest steel companies. It was born in 2006 when Lakshmi Mittal's steel empire, which began with a single Indonesian mill bought in 1976, took over the European giant Arcelor—itself a merger of firms from Luxembourg, Spain, and France. Its name is simply the two firms' names spliced together.
