A Swedish audio-streaming service that lets people listen to music, podcasts, and audiobooks on demand, offering both a free ad-supported tier and a paid Premium subscription. Founded in 2006 in Stockholm by Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon, it launched in 2008 as a legal alternative to the music piracy of the Napster era. The name came from a happy accident: the founders shouted name ideas between rooms, and Ek misheard one suggestion as "Spotify," liked the sound, and grabbed the domain.
