A holding company that steers the Italian De Benedetti family's business empire, CIR SPA owns a spread of businesses from automotive components (through Sogefi) to newspaper and multimedia publishing (GEDI, publisher of la Repubblica) to healthcare services. Founded in 1976 by engineer Carlo De Benedetti, its name stands for "Compagnie Industriali Riunite" — United Industrial Companies — reflecting the many brands it gathers under one roof.
