A maker of genetic medicines, 4D Molecular Therapeutics engineers custom viral delivery vehicles to treat diseases of the eye, lung, and heart. Founded in 2013 by a UC Berkeley professor and a biotech entrepreneur who met at a university innovation hub, the company got its start in a garage incubator. Its name reflects the four dimensions of optimization its scientists pursue when designing the adeno-associated virus vectors that carry therapeutic genes into the body.
