A cloud-software company in Buffalo, New York, Synacor builds the behind-the-scenes tech that lets people log in and use their email and streaming services. Its Zimbra suite powers email and collaboration for organizations, while its Cloud ID handles the "TV Everywhere" sign-ins that let cable subscribers watch shows across devices. It began in 1998 as Chek.com, started by two University at Buffalo roommates who made free, branded email accounts for companies like Budweiser, and merged in 2001 to become Synacor.
