Digirad Corporation

A maker of solid-state nuclear medicine imaging systems, Digirad builds compact cameras like the Cardius line that help hospitals and cardiology practices scan patients' hearts, and it also brings mobile imaging services directly to clinics. Founded in San Diego in 1985 as San Diego Semiconductors, it renamed itself Digirad in 1994, a nod to "digital radiography." Its technology began as a Cold War project: a DARPA-funded portable gamma camera built to count nuclear warheads inside missile nosecones.
