One of the world's largest investment firms, Blackstone manages money for big institutions like pension funds and puts it to work buying companies and real estate around the globe. Its name is a clever mashup of its two 1985 founders' names — "Black" from Stephen Schwarzman (schwarz is German for black) and "Stone" from Peter Peterson (petra is Greek for stone) — a nod to both men without the usual Wall Street last-name combo.
