iShares Trust
A family of exchange-traded funds, or ETFs, that trade on stock exchanges like ordinary shares and track everything from U.S. and international stocks to bonds and whole market sectors. Managed by BlackRock, one of the world's largest asset managers, iShares funds are popular building blocks for everyday investors. The brand was born in 2000, when Britain's Barclays bank rebranded its early funds — first launched in 1996 as WEBS, short for World Equity Benchmark Shares — and named them iShares, where the "i" stands for index. The iShares Trust is the legal wrapper that holds these funds.
