A maker of premium luggage, backpacks, and travel accessories, Tumi is best known for its tough black ballistic-nylon bags favored by frequent business travelers. It was founded in 1975 by Charlie Clifford, a former Peace Corps volunteer in Peru, who named the company after the tumi, an ancient Incan ceremonial knife he encountered there.
