A maker of premium luggage, backpacks, and travel accessories, Tumi is best known for its tough black ballistic-nylon bags favored by frequent business travelers. It was founded in 1975 by Charlie Clifford, a former Peace Corps volunteer in Peru, who named the company after the tumi, an ancient Incan ceremonial knife he encountered there. The brand rose to prominence in the 1980s with its ultra-durable, military-grade nylon travel bags.
