A Fremont, California chip designer that put the brains inside DVD and Blu-ray players, IPTV set-top boxes, HDTVs, and smart-home gear. Founded in 1982, it made system-on-a-chip processors for digital media and became a major steward of Z-Wave home-control technology after buying it in 2008. Fun fact: its SMP chip families stood for "Secure Media Processor," reflecting the hardware copy protection that made broadcasters trust them.
