Multi-Fineline Electronix, Inc.

A maker of the thin, bendable "flexible printed circuits" that let smartphones, wearables, and other gadgets fold into tight spaces, Multi-Fineline Electronix (MFLEX) became one of the world's largest producers in its niche. Founded in Anaheim, California, in 1984, it opened its first Chinese plant in Suzhou in 1994. Its name is a play on words: "Multi" for multi-layered circuits and "Fineline" for the ultra-fine traces it prints, with "Electronix" spelled with an X for flair. A Chinese firm later bought it and took it private.
