Salzgitter AG

A German steel and technology group, Salzgitter AG makes flat steel for cars, construction and appliances, plus pipes and tubes sold under the famous Mannesmann brand, which traces to the 1885 invention of the seamless steel tube by the Mannesmann brothers. Its roots reach back to an ironworks founded in 1858, and its name comes from the city of Salzgitter, which itself is oddly named for salt, not steel — "Salz" means salt and "Gitter" a gate or toll point.
