A universal bank headquartered in Siena, Italy, offering everyday banking to households—current accounts, cards, mortgages—plus corporate services like leasing and project finance. Founded in 1472 as a charitable "mount of piety" lending to the poor, it is the oldest bank in the world still operating. Its name means "Mount of the Pastures": in 1624 the Grand Duke of Tuscany backed the bank's accounts with income from state-owned grazing lands in the Maremma region.
