Lasertec Corporation

A maker of precision inspection and measurement machines for the semiconductor industry, Lasertec builds the systems that scan the photomasks used to print computer-chip circuits, hunting for tiny defects before they reach the silicon. Based in Yokohama, it traces its roots to a lab founded in 1960 that started out designing X-ray television cameras for medicine before turning to semiconductors in the 1970s. The company only became "Lasertec" in 1986, renaming itself after inventing the world's first color laser scanning microscope.
