One of the world's largest banks, BNP Paribas is a French universal bank serving everyday savers, businesses, and big corporations with everything from checking accounts to corporate lending and investment banking. It was born in 2000 when two French institutions merged: BNP and Paribas. The name Paribas is a mash-up of Paris and Pays-Bas (French for the Netherlands), a nod to the Dutch bank that joined the original 1872 Banque de Paris et des Pays-Bas.
