Japan Tobacco Inc.

A maker of cigarettes and other tobacco products sold in more than 130 markets, Japan Tobacco's brands include Winston, Camel, and Mevius, and it also runs pharmaceutical and processed-food businesses. Its roots go back to 1898, when the Japanese government set up a monopoly on tobacco, which later became the Japan Tobacco and Salt Public Corporation before being privatized in 1985. The company's name simply reflects that state-run origin — and its predecessor once handled the nation's salt supply too.
