Blucora owned TaxAct, the low-cost consumer and professional tax software, and Avantax Wealth Management, a broker-dealer serving financial and tax professionals. It began in 1996 as InfoSpace, the early internet firm founded by ex-Microsoft engineer Naveen Jain, and renamed itself Blucora in 2012 after buying TaxAct's maker; the made-up name was chosen as a "neutral" brand for its new direction. It later sold TaxAct and became Avantax before being bought by Cetera.
