A maker of portable 3D measurement and imaging tools, FARO Technologies builds the articulated FaroArm and ScanArm devices that factories, construction crews, and public-safety teams use to scan and precisely measure objects in three dimensions. It was founded in 1981 by two McGill University doctoral students, Simon Raab and Greg Fraser, who first made medical devices for measuring limbs to fit prosthetics before renaming the company FARO in 1983. The name comes from the Spanish word for "lighthouse," chosen as a symbol of clarity and guidance.
