A maker of one-time gene therapies for rare genetic diseases, bluebird bio treats conditions like sickle cell disease, beta-thalassemia, and cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy with its FDA-approved products Lyfgenia, Zynteglo, and Skysona. The company was founded in 1992 by MIT faculty members as Genetix Pharmaceuticals, then took the name bluebird bio in 2010 after the Eastern Bluebird, a symbol of renewal. In 2025 it rebranded back to its original name, Genetix Biotherapeutics.
