Pearson Plc
A London-based education company, Pearson supplies textbooks, digital courseware, assessments and qualifications used by students, teachers and professionals around the world. It began in 1844 when Yorkshire builder Samuel Pearson founded S. Pearson & Son, a construction firm that grew into one of the world's largest engineering contractors, building tunnels in London and New York and railways overseas before becoming a sprawling conglomerate. A curious detour: for years it owned Penguin Books, merging that publisher with Bertelsmann's Random House in 2013, though its name simply honors the founder rather than any product.
