A Tokyo-based internet financial conglomerate that runs online securities, banking, and asset-management businesses, including SBI SECURITIES and SBI Shinsei Bank. It began in 1999 as SoftBank Investment Corporation, a venture arm of SoftBank, before going independent in 2006. The initials "SBI" originally stood for "SoftBank Investment" and were later redefined as "Strategic Business Innovator" after the split.
